How to Turn Off Narrator in Windows (8.1, 10, and 11)

Narrator is the built-in screen reader in Windows. It reads on-screen text aloud to help people with low vision, but it is easy to switch on by accident. Here is how to turn it off, whether you are on Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11.

The Quick Way (All Versions)

Press Caps Lock + Esc to exit Narrator immediately. On Windows 10 and 11 you can also press Windows + Ctrl + Enter to toggle Narrator on and off.

Turn It Off in Settings

Windows 8.1

Step 1: Open the Narrator Settings window. Step 2: Choose Exit. Step 3: Click Yes to confirm.

Windows 10 and 11

Step 1: Open Settings and go to Accessibility (called Ease of Access in Windows 10). Step 2: Select Narrator. Step 3: Turn the Narrator switch Off. While you are there, you can also turn off the keyboard shortcut so it does not start by accident.
