How to Reset a Local Admin Password in Windows 10 and 11

Forgetting the local administrator password on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC is more common than you might think, and you do not always need a password reset disk to fix it. Below are the most reliable ways to regain access. They apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Method 1: Use Another Administrator Account

If the computer has a second account with administrator rights, this is the easiest route.

Step 1: Sign in to the other administrator account from the Windows login screen.

Step 2: Right-click the Start button and choose Computer Management.

Step 3: Go to System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users.

Step 4: Right-click the account whose password you forgot, choose Set Password, and follow the prompt to enter a new one.

Method 2: Reset a Microsoft Account Password Online

Many Windows 10 and 11 sign-ins are Microsoft accounts rather than true local accounts. If yours is, you can reset it from any device at account.microsoft.com and then sign in with the new password.

Method 3: Use a Password Reset Disk

If you created a password reset disk or USB ahead of time, click Reset password on the login screen after a failed attempt and follow the wizard.

A Word of Caution

Third-party password recovery tools exist, but many are unreliable or unsafe, and resetting a local password can lock you out of files that were encrypted with that account. If you are unsure, it is worth getting help before you risk losing data.
