How to Recover an Unsaved or Crashed PowerPoint Presentation

Have you ever spent hours on a PowerPoint presentation only to have it crash or close without saving? It is frustrating, but do not panic. PowerPoint has built-in recovery features that can often bring your work back. Here is how to restart PowerPoint and recover an unsaved presentation.

Step 1: Restart PowerPoint

When you reopen PowerPoint after a crash, it automatically searches for unsaved work and offers to recover it.

1. Close PowerPoint completely.
2. Open PowerPoint again.
3. Watch for the Document Recovery pane on the left, or a prompt asking whether to recover the file. Open the recovered version and save it right away.

Step 2: Use the AutoRecover Feature

If no prompt appears, AutoRecover may still have a copy.

1. In PowerPoint, click File.
2. Click Open, then select Recent.
3. Click Recover Unsaved Presentations at the bottom of the list.
4. Select your file, click Open, and then save it.

Step 3: Look for Temporary Files

If the steps above do not work, check the AutoRecover folder.

1. Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles
2. Look for a file with the .pptx or .asd extension and open it in PowerPoint.
3. If it is the file you were working on, save it to a safe location.

To avoid this in future, open File > Options > Save and set AutoRecover to save every few minutes.
